Leading change in large organizations is more than just teaching Scrum to developers or SAFe to a broader product organization. The scale and complexity are huge. The number of stakeholders is mind-numbing. And aligning interests across the organization is almost impossible. For Agile to work, it's going to require a different approach to how we think about process and methodology, how we think about transitioning to this new way of working, and how we make sure the changes are effective now and in the future. To unpack this, we explore the differences between what we call a System of Delivery (SOD), a System of Transformation (SOT), and a System of Continuous Improvement (SOCI): When we talk about Scrum, SAFe, LeSS, and Waterfall governance models, we're talking about a SOD. Any talk about technical practices, running effective retrospectives, or better daily standups are all about the systems we're using to deliver on the organization's outcomes. How we install those methodologies is what we call a SOT. How we train ScrumMasters, remove systematic dependencies, influence corporate governance, or align with strategic objectives are all part of the SOT. This system is all about planning, executing, and measuring the efficacy of the change. As markets evolve and drive new product demand, the organization will have to systematically adapt and respond to the emerging market. This requires a level of intentionality and a SOCI to ensure the organizational structure, governance model, and key performance indicators can adapt to meet the needs of an ever-changing marketplace. This talk will explore each system's key attributes: the critical success factors, why the systems are necessary, and how they individually and collectively work together to help an organization build momentum, become a more effective delivery organization, and sustain momentum going forward.
