Revolutionary Leadership – My Journey!

In Agile organizations and teams, we teach the importance of leadership over management and teamwork over individual accomplishment. The question is what intentional actions are we employing to achieve this vital goal?

Young and emerging managers are often selected due to their success as individual contributors. We find the people best at getting stuff done and then ask them to lead, manage and administer a group of people. The problem is great skills as an individual contributor are NOT the same skills as leading and motivating people. Often, as emerging leaders we stumble greatly. My story is THAT story!

This discussion is based on my story as a young and emerging leader and my journey from a foundation of command and control – without realizing it, to a style of trust and confidence in others to do the work better, more creatively and faster than I could have myself. This is inclusive discussion about how I moved from being confident in myself but NOT in others, confident in knowing how to do things well, but NOT in trusting others to do things as well or better. Confident in my own ability but feeling a need to micromanage every situation, but NOT understanding and ultimately knowing that other team members are not only as capable, but often MUCH MORE capable of delivering an outstanding outcome for our customers and clients.

We will explore my AHA moments! The catalysts for my discovery of how to evolve into a better leader, focused on creating opportunities for others to excel and in fact lead on their own. How tough challenges were used to create an environment is which great ideas, concepts and innovations are enabled and accelerated. Finally, we discuss how to build a framework of team first, innovation and leadership skill development through strong two-way active mentoring approaches including the use of reverse mentors

Participants in this discussion will gain insight and approaches to expand their own leadership approach and extend the skills of everyone in their teams. We will give examples of how to create an environment that helps leaders and everyone around them to become radically better and to do so in a sustainable way. We will show how this change in team communication will set the stage for significant success within each team.
